Respiratory Acute Care Unit
The RACU is a 12-bed unit at MGH that specializes in the care of patients in need of prolonged mechanical ventilation or other advanced respiratory care. The patients served have diverse medical, surgical and neurological disease and are often chronically critically ill.
Fellows on this rotation work with an attending pulmonologist, nurse practitioners and a dedicated respiratory therapist. Learning focuses on respiratory physiology, advanced management of invasive and non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy care and liberation from the ventilator. Fellows also have the opportunity to visit a long-term acute care facility and learn about the multi-disciplinary approach to caring for these complex patients.
