Medical Education
Fellows on the Medical Education Pathway will be prepared for a career in educational leadership. In this well-established, comprehensive training program, fellows will develop the skills to not only become master teachers, but also to conduct innovative, high-quality medical education research.
This pathway is supported by the unique opportunities and infrastructure available through the Carl. J Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at BIDMC. Several of our PCCM faculty have additional appointments for education-specific leadership and research activities through the Carl. J Shapiro Institute. Additional opportunities are available through the MGH Center for Educational Innovation and Scholarship.
Mentorship is provided by division faculty members who are national leaders in medical education.
The well-developed infrastructure of the education pathway includes the following components:
Didactics in Education Theory and Research Methods
Education Research Core Curriculum: cognitive theory, principles of adult learning theory, curriculum development, survey design, basics of quantitative and qualitative research
BIDMC Clinical Educator Track for Fellows (application required)
Harvard Medical Academy Fellowship in Medical Education and Scholarship (application required)
Medical Education Scholars Program at BIDMC (application required)
Research Experience
Primary Education Research Project, mentored from inception to first-author publication
Education projects with additional faculty to gain experience in a breadth of qualitative and quantitative skills
Participation in Shapiro Institute Medical Education Research Lab
Education research grant submission
Practical Experience
Teaching activities for learners at all levels (Undergraduate, Graduate, and Continuing Medical Education)
Iterative observation and structured feedback on teaching from expert faculty
Creation of durable educational materials (videos, web-based teaching tools, written curricula)
Opportunities to design and implement medical simulation experiences
