Academic Interests

Kathryn has dual interests in physiology-based medical education and clinical critical care trials. In education, she previously served as the Associate Program Director for the fellowship program and currently serves as a Core Faculty Member focused on a physiologic understanding of and approach to critical illness. She, along with Dr. Corey Hardin, have developed an Advanced Physiology Elective for the internal medicine residency, which offers an opportunity for second and third year residents to return to the classroom and examine more closely the physiology they have witnessed on the wards. Kathryn also serves the Department of Medicine Core Educator for Critical Care. Kathryn has been the site PI for the PETAL network trials including ROSE, CLOVERS, and VIOLET, and has been actively involved as site PI or co-PI for multiple platform trials in COVID-19 therapeutics including TESICO, Activ-3/TICO, and NECTAR. She is also a co-PI for a multi-center VAP diagnostics trial examining exhaled breath condensate, and locally has been co-PI for a novel sepsis intervention alert system called Sepsis Watch.
